This month I started the long process of choreographing the next big YAC stage show. For me, this means taking my scattered handful of ideas and weaving them together into a tapestry that will hold together as a single unit on the stage as dance theatre. As always, I want to do something different with this show. This time, I feel challenged to work with large tableaux and dance theatre in the truest sense of the word. I visualize this new show as being a sort of “bellydance ballet” in that I would like the entire show to be held together with a story line. And then, just to complicate things a bit more…
I need to digress and tell another story first…
I play bari sax. Yes – baritone sax. In a 15-piece swing band. Called The Big Band (…because we couldn’t think of a name, and since we play big band music, that’s just sort of what we called it – and the name stuck.) In fact, I am the manager of The Big Band! And my husband is the rehearsal leader (really, it just happened – its not like we planned a hostile takeover or anything, lol!). and…I’m the MC for the band (are you surprised?) Anyway – I absolutely ADORE playing in the band. I adore big band swing music. When we’re playing a gig and I’m introducing the next number or loosing my place in the music because I’m too busy trying not to watch the dancers, there is absolutely nothing else I would rather be doing in that moment. Nothing. Not even bellydance. In fact, if I had to choose between The Big Band and bellydance…
well….let’s just say that I hope I never have to make that choice.
Anyway – back to the original story: “and then, just to complicate things a bit more…” I am going to put The Big Band on the big stage with Saba. Probably not in the way you’re thinking. I’m not promising to choreograph bellydance to big band, (and I’m not saying I won’t either!) but they’re gonna be there. My two loves come together on one stage. Big band and bellydance. ♥
Anyway, What do bellydance and The Big Band have in common besides me? Well, not much, maybe – but ya gotta admit it, I’m a pretty big factor!
Hi Nita, Great blog! I’ve gone through and read a couple posts so far. I really like the idea of incorporating swing music and belly dance that sounds like it would be a lot of fun!
I just wanted to drop a short message and a link to my blog like you asked:
